Why Norwich City’s decision to cut short Ralf Fahrmann’s loan deal is a win-win for both parties

According to Sky Sports, FC Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann has cut short his season-long loan spell at Norwich City.

The 31-year-old German left Carrow Road and has joined with Norwegian side SK Brann on loan until June 30. With as many as three goalkeepers already in the side, FC Schalke had, earlier in July last year, decided to send Fahrmann on loan to newly promoted side Norwich.

Meanwhile, Norwich, who were the champions of the second-tier last season, had roped in the German keeper as a back-up to their first-choice man Tim Krul. However, things did not go entirely according to plan for both Fahrmann and Norwich, with both the parties deciding to part ways after a rather unsuccessful season together.

Fahrmann played just three times for Daniel Farke’s team during his time at Carrow Road. He made just one Premier League appearance during his time there – that too in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

To make things worse, Fahrmann was walked off the pitch even before completing the half-time after sustaining an injury. His two other appearances came in the FA Cup and EFL Cup respectively. In both the games he played the full 90 minutes and was a part of his side’s only victory in the FA Cup fourth-round match against Burnley which the Canaries won 2-1.

Meanwhile, in his only EFL Cup appearance, he conceded one goal, losing to lower division side Crawley. A regular in the FC Schalke side until the 2018-19 season, much was expected from the experienced shot-shopper. However, he failed to live up to his expectations and mostly spent time warming the benches at Carrow Road.

Norwich, on the other hand, seem to have lost the plot as they are reeling at the bottom of the Premier League table. Despite achieving promotion just last year, the Canaries are sure to get relegated back to the lower division once again unless a miracle happens.

With the side solely dependent on first-goalkeeper Krul, Fahrmann’s chances of playing time were also very limited. Norwich now have veteran keeper Michael McGovern as a back-up for Krul.

Despite being a better keeper, Fahrmann failed to get enough game time as even McGovern managed to play more matches than the former. The latter has so far played a total of 4 matches for Norwich, of which two have come in the Premier League.

Moreover, with Norwich consistently suffering a poor slump of form and relegation threat hanging on their head, the decision to cut short Fahrmann’s stay indeed seems to be a wise one.

Verdict

It’s almost predictable now that Norwich will soon get relegated. With the club facing such a scenario, it is better to offload fringe players who are eating up the wage bill. Hence, Norwich’s decision to cut short Fahrmann’s loan spell is a win-win for both parties.
