Manchester City had one hell of a season under Pep Guardiola. The Cityzens smashed numerous records in their title-winning campaign. City now hold the record for the most points scored in a season, most consecutive wins in a season, most number of wins in a season, most number of goals in a season, and the most number of passes made in a single game. The list just goes on and on.
Guardiola silenced his critics, who gave him a lot of stick after the manager’s trophy-less first season. Manchester City is the only club Guardiola failed to win a trophy in his first season in charge but boy did he come back strong!
All eyes will be on the World Cup now but there will be business as usual in the football transfer window. City haven’t yet completed any signings this window but Pep will be making a few additions to the squad. Fellow big clubs have already started their transfer work with most of them already making their first signing. City should be making theirs sooner than later.
One player that has been linked with the club is 27-year-old Juventus winger Douglas Costa. The Brazilian enjoyed a successful loan spell at Turin, making 18 appearances in the league, scoring 4 goals and providing 12 assists in the process. He also made appearances in the Champions League as well as Coppa Italia. Juventus lifted the Serie A title as well as the Coppa Italia and Douglas Costa was an influential member in the squad.
The Brazilian only recently completed a £35m permanent move from Bayern Munich to Juventus but Guardiola is hopeful the winger can still be persuaded to make the move to England. Guardiola is reportedly a huge admirer of the player and is ready to splash £88m to land the player.
Surely, Pep is going to have to break the bank on this one. The former Barcelona coach sees Costa as perfect competition for Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling. His pace, skills, trickery and shooting are the kind of qualities the Cityzens could make use of.
If Pep and Co. plan to mount a strong title defense next season, they are certainly going to need a few new faces in the team. With the other teams already making additions, City will be falling behind and have to kick-start their own business as soon as possible. Douglas Costa would surely be a great addition to this already brilliant team of youngsters. If he does decide to make the move, Manchester City could end up being unplayable.
