The Brazilian Grand Prix has always held a special place in the Formula One calendar.
Many a time, driver’s championships are won on Interlagos with Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa fighting it out nearly a decade ago.
Hamilton ended up winning his first title with McLaren-Mercedes by beating Massa by one point.
There has always been a lot of drama and action in the Brazilian GP, however, some drivers have paid tribute with Ayrton Senna helmets.
Senna was one of the best racers in the world but his life ended tragically during the 1994 Imola GP.
Hamilton has worn a special Ayrton Senna helmet in the past and called him an ‘idol’ a few years back (h/t Daily Mail).
Senna’s nephew, Bruno, also spent time in Formula One and donned an adapted version of the legend’s helmet.
Hamilton isn’t the only one to have paid tribute to Senna with a helmet design with former Ferrari and Brawn racer Rubens Barrichello doing the same during the 1995 Brazilian GP.
There could be similar tributes to Senna in this weekend’s Brazilian GP too.
Hamilton has been honoured by the Brazilian’s family over the years for reaching several of the former racer’s milestones, and the British driver became just the second six-time F1 champion recently.
Senna started his F1 career with Toleman Motorsport before moving on to Lotus in 1985. He came fourth in both his seasons with the team and then jumped to the bigger Honda McLaren team in 1988.
His helmet donned a yellow and green scheme and the former racer won three world titles during his F1 career.
The Brazilian had a great rivalry with Alain Prost, and the pair were involved in a title fight in 1989 and 1990.
Senna won his first driver’s title in his debut season with McLaren and finished second in the next campaign.
He won two consecutive titles with McLaren before finishing fourth and second in 1992 and 1993 respectively.
The Brazilian was unable to finish the 1994 season and featured in three races until his tragic death.
The Ayrton Senna crash led to many changes in F1 with greater safety features on and off track. The Brazilian wasn’t the only one to have passed away on that tragic weekend as Roland Ratzenberger passed away in qualifying..
Formula One has come a long way since those dangerous days of the 90s. However, the sport is still risky as the recent passing away of Anthoine Hubert proved.
