Why Rafael Camacho to Manchester United would be a good move
According to Football Insider (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United are in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon star Rafael Camacho in the summer.
Premier League clubs Everton, Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in Camacho, as per the report. And these clubs have watched the youngster in action for Sporting Lisbon throughout the season.
Camacho, 19, returned to his hometown last season after failing to impress at Liverpool, whom he initially joined as a youth player. He has done well in the Liga NOS this season, contributing with one assist. He was impressive in the game against Portimonense last weekend and has been good coming on from the bench for his side.
The teenager is contracted at the Jose Alvalade Stadium until 2024 but he has indicated his openness to leave the club, as per Football Insider (h/t The Express). And United are in a battle against rivals Everton to sign Camacho. (h/t Daily Star)
Meanwhile, Manchester United don’t have many options on the flanks with Daniel James and Jesse Lingard as the only options.
The former Swansea City man started off his United career with pace as he scored 3 goals in August but since then, he hasn’t contributed much. On the other hand, Lingard has been out of form for a long time and seems to have lost his place in the squad and with the English national team.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need to make significant additions to the squad if they are to challenge for titles in the next season. He has already used many youngsters this term, giving enough chances to the likes of James, Brandon Williams, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Greenwood and a few more. The Norwegian also brought in Bruno Fernandes to strengthen the squad.
And therefore, to further back up his strikers, he would be wise to bring youngsters who can support to play supporting roles in the frontline. In that case, Sporting Lisbon’s Rafael Camacho would be a valuable addition to the squad.
The 19-year-old is enjoying a brilliant season with his hometown club. A right-winger by trade, he can also operate on the left and in the midfield. He is also capable of playing as a right-back.
Camacho has scored 12 goals in 20 games for Liverpool’s youth teams last season. And despite coming on mostly as a substitute for Sporting Lisbon, he has shown enough qualities.
At United, he would be a better back-up for Daniel James, who has been covering the right side of the pitch.
