Why Rangers must do everything to beat Celtic and win the Scottish Premiership

No fan would ever want to witness their team get voted out of top-tier football. The fact that it happened to a club with a rich history like Rangers is astounding but the pain experienced by their fans is truly unimaginable. Now, let us take a look at the reasons as to why the club must win the Scottish Premiership this season.

Rangers’ fans stood behind the team through thick and thin

The last few years for have not been great for Rangers. Financial turmoil sent the Glasgow giants out of the Scottish Premier League in 2012. As a result, one of the most successful clubs in the history of Scottish football had to fight it out in the third division in the 2012/13 season.

After topping the third division, Rangers found themselves in the Scottish League One in 2013. As expected, the Rangers decimated all their opponents and got promoted to the Scottish Championship. The 2014/15 season kicked off and the Gers fans expected the club to convincingly top the league and qualify for the Scottish Premiership, where they rightfully belong. But the Rangers fans were in for a rude shock.

The club not only failed to qualify but they also finished third behind Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian.

The dejected Rangers bounced back with a bang the next season, winning the Championship with 81 points. With this result, they were finally back to the top division.

Rangers witnessed arch-rivals Celtic establishing their dominance

Much was expected from the club on their return to top-tier football. But, Celtic fought tooth-and-nail and proved their dominance. Under Brendan Rodgers, Celtic completed a domestic treble, winning the Scottish Premiership, League Cup and the Scottish Cup. They were also undefeated in 47 domestic games as they finished first with 106 points. In comparison, the Gers finished third with merely 67 points.

The following season also yielded a similar result as Celtic completed a historic double treble and Rangers finished third yet again.

The beginning of Steven Gerrard era

Steven Gerrard’s appointment as their new manager has clearly signalled the dawn of a new era for the club.

When Gerrard was paraded in front of the fans at Ibrox, a Rangers scarf came flying from the crowd and landed on the shoulders of the person next to Gerrard. The Liverpool legend immediately took the scarf and placed it around his neck. The crowd roared in joy as Gerrard had not only carried the scarf around his neck but also the hopes of millions of fans who have waited long enough to see their club get back to glory.
