Former Liverpool star John Barnes has urged Rangers to make a move for Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram this summer, as per Daily Record.
The report suggests that the Gers have been linked with a move for Lundstram but they could face competition to secure his services as West Ham are also interested in signing the Englishman. He has just one more year left on his contract with the Blades.
Born in England, Lundstram is a product of Everton’s youth system. He spent the majority of his Toffees career on loan spells. He played for lower league side like Yeovil Town, Blackpool, Leyton Orient and Scunthorpe United before joining Oxford United on a free transfer in August 2015.
After making 104 appearances for the U’s in two years, he was signed by the Blades on a free transfer. Since then, he has established himself as a key figure of the squad. Though he didn’t feature regularly last season, Lundstram has been one of the key players in Sheffield United’s excellent run on their return to the top-flight.
He enjoyed a brilliant 2019/20 campaign, helping his side to a 9th place finish in the Premier League as he scored 5 goals and 3 assists in 34 league games.
At the moment, four attack-minded midfielders are available at Steven Gerrard’s disposal. Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo have been regular starters as they have claimed the spots for themselves. Scott Arfield has also done a decent job whenever called upon and they also have experienced campaigner Steven Davies.
However, Arfield and Davies are on the other side of 30 and reaching the twilight of their careers. And the Northern Ireland international has just one more year left on his contract with the Gers. Thus, a midfielder is a must this summer.
In that regard, making a move for Lundstram would do them a world of good. The Englishman was in sensational form for the Blades and inspired them to a top-ten finish last season. He has made over 300 career appearances and his experience would be a massive boost to the squad.
The 26-year-old’s inclusion to Gerrard’s squad would provide them with some valuable quality. And given his experience, he could be a leader in the Gers’ midfield for a few years. Lundstram could also be a perfect replacement for Arfield or Davies soon.
At 26, the Blades star has a lot to offer in the future and his presence could bolster Rangers’ midfield. Moreover, with Arfield and Davies ageing, it is clear that they are in need of experienced campaigners to lead them in the near future. Thus, Rangers should lure Lundstram to Ibrox this summer.
