Go for it Gerrard – Rangers signing this out-of-favour Chelsea star would be valuable

Why Rangers should reignite their interest in Oliver Giroud

Back in December, Chelsea and France striker Olivier Giroud was linked with a move to Rangers in the January transfer window, as per French Newspaper L’Equipe (h/t The Sun). But a deal didn’t take place and the former Arsenal star stayed put at Stamford Bridge.

Steven Gerrard’s side have made life difficult for them by giving away points in the last few games and are currently 10 points behind leaders Celtic. Their hopes of getting their hands on the Premiership title has become even harder.

The Gers strikers Alfredo Morelos, Florian Kamberi and Greg Stewart haven’t scored in any of their last five league games. Despite starting the season on a high note and banging in goals regularly, the forwards’ goalless streak of late has put them in a difficult position.

And it is clear that Gerrard should bring in reinforcements in the summer to see that they can challenge for the title. The Glasgow club hasn’t lifted the title since 2011 and the chance to lift it this year has gone away from their hands. And the manager should consider signing a striker, who can make an impact in difficult times. Hence, it would be wise to go for Giroud.

Kamberi is on loan and he would be back on is way back to Hibernian after his loan spell. And Jermain Defoe, who did so well this term has been injured and nothing can be said of his consistency once he returns.

Apart from them, Morelos and Stewart are the only two target men left. Therefore, Giroud could be a brilliant addition to the squad.

The Frenchman has made 253 appearances for Arsenal in his six years at the club and scored 105 goals, including some crucial strikes. He joined Chelsea in 2018 and was a regular member under Maurizio Sarri and Antonio Conte. He has played at the highest level for many years and has been out of favour this season under Lampard.

The 33-year-old’s experience would be a huge boost to the Rangers squad if they pursue him and he is capable of delivering when needed, as evident from the numerous goals he has scored in his career so far.

Giroud has some more energy left to play and Rangers must take the opportunity to make full use of his presence. Though he may not be a starter, he can play the supporting role and if he is given a chance, he can be helpful to the team.

Verdict

He might be 33, but his qualities can never be doubted. He would also add depth to the Gers squad and they can expect him to contribute in difficult situations. Therefore, Gerrard must take advantage of the World Cup winner’s situation at Stamford Bridge and lure him to the Ibrox in the summer.
