Back in April, the Daily Record suggested that Rangers were considering a move for Sint-Truidense forward Mohamed Buya Turay as a replacement for Alfredo Morelos in the summer.
Turay, 25, joined Sint-Truidense in the summer of 2018 and was sent on loan after half a season to Swedish side Djurgarden. He proved himself in the Swedish league after finishing as the league’s top scorer with 15 goals in 29 league games, helping his side lift the Allsvenskan title.
However, he returned to his parent club only in December and couldn’t make it into the starting XI before the league got suspended. But his impressive performances in the last couple of seasons had put him on Rangers’ radar, as per the report.
The Gers, meanwhile, have lost the Premiership title once again to their rivals Celtic, who lifted it for the 9th time in a row. Despite starting the season on a high note, Steven Gerrard’s men fell short by 13 points when the league came to an abrupt end.
However, the manager should now focus on strengthening the squad if they are to topple Celtic’s dominance. They need to bring in reinforcements and add depth to the squad to progress in the near future.
One key area the manager should focus on strengthening is the centre-forward position. Despite the Gers’ inconsistency, strikers Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe led the line brilliantly, scoring 12 and 13 goals respectively. But the latter fell a victim to injury and didn’t feature for quite some time.
They signed Florian Kamberi on loan in January but the Albanian returned to his parent club after the loan spell ended last month. However, their numbers could be reduced in the summer as Morelos has been heavily linked with a move away from the club in the summer. Thus, a striker is a must in the summer and Sint-Truidense forward Turay would be a viable option for the club.
After scoring 9 goals for Dalkurd FF in the Swedish league in the 2018 season, Turay continued with the fine form in the following campaign. He has made nearly 120 career appearances and has scored an impressive 51 goals in total for all the clubs he has played for in the past.
The Sierra Leone international would undoubtedly add depth to Gerrard’s squad and would develop into a key player if he is able to replicate the same form that he has shown in the past. He has developed himself and has been consistent in the last two years.
With Morelos’ future uncertain at the club and Defoe already past his prime, Rangers need to strengthen their attacking unit. And Turay, given his goalscoring ability, would be a perfect fit at Ibrox. Thus, the Gers should reignite their interest in the Sierra Leone striker and make a move for him at the earliest.
