Former Rangers star Derek Parlane has urged the club to make a move for Liverpool midfielder James Milner in the summer, according to The Sun.
Milner, 34, is a product of Leeds United’s youth system. He played for several clubs including Swindon Town, Aston Villa and Newcastle United before joining Manchester City in the summer of 2010. In his five seasons at Etihad, the midfielder won several trophies including two Premier League titles.
In the summer of 2015, Liverpool signed him on a free transfer and he has gone on to become a key player in the club’s rise to the top. He was an integral member of the squad which won the Champions League last season and also the league title this term. However, he has seen limited game time this season. Thus, Rangers should make a move for him in the summer.
Rangers have a plethora of midfield talents in their ranks in Glen Kamara, Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack, Steven Davies, Joe Aribo and Greg Docherty. They have been decent throughout the campaign but some of them have lacked consistency on several occasions.
Apart from that, Ianis Hagi has also completed a permanent move to Ibrox, which is a good sign for the club as the Romanian showed glimpses of his potential since his move in January. However, they need to add experience to their midfield, and signing Milner could be a massive boost for the squad.
The English veteran is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and has made over 700 career appearances. Milner is also capable of featuring in several positions on the field and his versatility could be a massive boost for the club. He may not be the fastest player but his experience could come in handy for Gerrard’s quad in some much-needed situations.
In 19 appearances this season, the 61-cap English international has scored 2 goals and 2 assists and still looks to be going strong. And if he is able to keep himself away from injuries, he could be a valuable player for the Gers for a few years.
At 34, Milner could bring in some of his experience to Rangers and has the energy left to play at a high level for a few more years. And Rangers could do well with another experienced midfielder in their ranks. Thus, they should make a move for the former Villa man this summer.
