Why Real Madrid should trigger Sergio Reguilon’s buyback clause

According to The Times (h/t Football.london), former Chelsea forward Tony Cascarino believes that Real Madrid should buy back Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham. Reguilon made the move to Spurs this summer and has impressed in his short stay at the club. A buyback clause of £41million was inserted into the deal, which means Real Madrid can buy him back outright for that amount next season.

Reguilon has been very impressive since his arrival

Reguilon impressed thoroughly for Sevilla last season and that led to a lot of speculation regarding his future. Clearly, his path at Madrid was blocked by the emergence of Ferland Mendy and the presence of Marcelo.

One look at Spurs’ left-back options and Reguilon looks like an instant upgrade on all of them. Danny Rose spent the 2019/20 season out on loan as Ben Davies and Japhet Tanganga competed for the spot. Since putting on the white shirt, Reguilon has hardly put a foot wrong.

The Spaniard has been played at wing-back and fullback and he has played both roles with aplomb. He has already contributed to 5 assists in 20 games for the side. Despite Spurs looking shaky in recent times, Reguilon has been a constant fixture in the side this season.

Real Madrid need to look past Marcelo

Gone are the days when Marcelo used to bomb down the left flank and put in a dangerous cross for the striker to finish. The veteran Brazilian looks to be on his last legs at the club, and has not been helped by the club struggling as a whole.

While he was never the finest defender, his inadequacies were masked by his outstanding attacking prowess. Now as the team is slowly showing cracks, Real are trying to phase out Marcelo and give more time to Ferland Mendy. That leaves Real Madrid with the task of finding another left-back who can compete with Mendy.

Bringing back a former player like Reguilon can help in that regard. The left-back was impressive during his spell at the club and also at Sevilla and Spurs. He has shown that he is capable of performing at both ends of the pitch, which would be an asset for Real. The club should use the £41million clause and bring him back to Spain.
