According to The Sun, Tottenham are interested in signing Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves in the summer to bolster their midfield ranks.
The 23-year-old came through the ranks of FC Porto’s youth system and staked his claim with the Portuguese outfit’s senior set-up. For three years, he was a regular member of the squad before moving to England with Wolves in the summer of 2017.
He has been a smash hit for Wolves in the Premier League, after inspiring them to the Championship title in 2018. He also came through various age-group levels with the Portuguese national team and helped the team to the UEFA Nations League trophy. The midfielder is rated at £50m. Thus, Tottenham should make a move for Neves in the summer.
The Lilywhites have struggled ever since they lost the Champions League final to Liverpool. The absence of Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Steven Bergwijn a few weeks before the league got suspended has cost Spurs heavily.
The attacking unit failed to deliver and Jose Mourinho was left with limited options. The defence has also struggled enormously, conceding 23 goals in the last 17 games across all competitions. Thus, the onus is on the manager to bring in reinforcements if they are to lift themselves up in the near future. There are several areas where Mourinho should focus on strengthening.
Despite having a plethora of midfield talents, Tottenham have struggled in the middle of the park for the majority of the season. Eric Dier is one of the main defensive midfielders but the Englishman has performed below par this term.
Summer signing Tanguy Ndombele has also failed to live up to the expectations and Giovani Lo Celso has not been effective enough for the team. Moussa Sissoko has also struggled with injuries this season. Thus, a midfielder is a must for Tottenham in the summer.
In that regard, Ruben Neves would be a smart signing for the squad. He has featured in all of the 29 league games so far and is one of the most consistent players in the league. His inclusion to Mourinho’s squad would certainly add depth and he is capable of pulling the strings from the middle of the park.
The Portuguese international could be a crucial player for Spurs next season, given his current form. And with experience, he could go on to be their leader in further campaigns. He is also capable of banging in goals from a deeper position, something Tottenham have been deprived of in recent times. His influence on the team could make him a leader in Tottenham’s midfield.
Tottenham’s midfield has been in shambles and with Ndombele’s future hanging up in the air, it would be wise to make a move for Neves. He is just 23 and could also represent them in the long run. Thus, the Lilywhites should manage to lure the Portuguese international at the earliest.
