Why Sami Khedira to West Ham United would make no sense

As per Calciomercato (h/t Daily Star), West ham are keen on making a move for Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira in the summer.

Khedira, 33, established himself as one of the most reliable midfielders in Europe during his five seasons with Real Madrid. He was also a crucial member of Germany’s World Cup winning squad in 2014. A year later, he made the switch to Juventus.

The German immediately became a regular member of the Serie A outfit and won four league titles with the Old Lady. However, he has struggled with form in the last three years and has had fitness issues consistently. Thus, West Ham making a move for him would not be a good choice.

David Moyes’ men have struggled to lift themselves to a respectable position despite getting off to a bright start under the Scotsman. With just 2 wins in their last 9 league games, the Hammers are currently 16th in the standings.

They are level on points with the relegation-threatened Bournemouth and are at risk of falling to the Championship if they don’t do better in the remainder of the season. They have failed in almost every area on the pitch and the team doesn’t look to be in good shape.

Thus, to bring a change in performances next season, the manager should bring in reinforcements and strengthen the squad before the new campaign commences. However, making a move for German international Sami Khedira would make no sense.

West Ham have a plethora of midfield talents in Declan Rice, Mark Noble, Jack Wilshere, Manuel Lanzini and Pablo Fornals. In that, Fornals, Rice and Noble have been regular starters and they have done a decent job despite the team’s lacklustre performance.

The Spaniard has provided 5 assists so far, whereas Noble has racked up 4 goals and 1 assist. Argentine international Lanzini also has 3 assists to his name despite missing the majority of the season due to an injury. Thus, Moyes can do better with the currently available members and Khedira should not be an option for them.

Khedira has featured in just 12 league games this season and has become a victim of injuries. He suffered the same fate last term as well and had a hand in just 10 games. He has already lost his place under Mauricio Sarri and is not as effective as he was before.

Verdict

The former Real Madrid man is already 33 and with injury issues, he may not be able to cope with the pace of the Premier League. And this would eventually lead to the Hammers wasting their resources on him if they sign the midfielder. Thus, West Ham should avoid making a move for the veteran German.
