Why Samuel Chukwueze to Manchester City would be a good move

According to Daily Mail, Manchester City are hoping to rope in Villareal winger Samuel Chukwueze in the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Chelsea and league leaders Liverpool are also interested in the winger and they could be in a three-way battle for Chukwueze. The Reds were previously linked with a £30m move but have made no formal offer.

Chukwueze, 20, joined Villareal’s U19 side from Diamond Academy in Nigeria in the summer of 2018 and initially played in Spain’s Segunda Division B. He was later promoted to the club’s first-team in November 2018 and has made 64 appearances for the Spanish outfit.

He made a breakthrough last season and scored 8 goals and provided 2 assists across all competitions for the senior team. And he has carried the same form into this campaign. The report suggests that he is a highly promising talent while being fast and skilful.

Since making his debut for Nigeria in 2018, Chukwueze had made 12 appearances with his national team and has scored twice.

The 22-year-old is predominantly a right-winger but is equally capable on the opposite flank and has also put in decent performances while being deployed behind a striker. This season, he has found the back of the net 4 times and has also provided the same number of assists in 26 games across all competitions.

The forward has drawn comparisons with former Dutch international Arjen Robben, who is also his inspiration, as per The Metro.

Realistically though, Manchester City would be better off looking at Chukwueze as one for the future, given the current level of names in the attacking ranks. However, he would be perfect for Pep Guardiola’s side as Leroy Sane’s commitment to the club is still in doubt. The German could be on his way to Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, who have backed Sane to push for a move, as per The Express.

Hence, if the German leaves, Manchester City must sign the Nigerian international to add depth to their squad. He would be a solid back-up for Raheem Sterling on the left side of the pitch.

Chukwueze has registered an average of 1.5 shots, 1.2 key passes, and 1.8 dribbles per game in the La Liga this season, according to Whoscored. And his numbers are no mean feat for a 20-year-old in Spain’s top-flight.

Verdict

City’s are well known for spending huge amounts on quality players and Villareal’s valuation of £60m for Chukwueze should not be a problem.

Therefore, City must beat off competition from their rivals and lure him to the Etihad in the summer.
