Why Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Manchester United would bolster their midfield

As per FootMercato (h/t The Sun), Manchester United are plotting a move for Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the summer transfer window.

Milinkovic-Savic, 25, came through the ranks of Vojvodina Novi Sad’s youth system and joined Genk in the summer of 2014. A year later, Lazio snapped him up. He came to prominence in the 2017/18 season, when he finished with 12 goals and 3 assists in the league. Since then, he has gone on to establish himself as one of the best central midfielders in Europe.

The Serbian has been in sensational form in the last three seasons and has also made 15 appearances at the international level since his debut in 2017. His impressive performances have also attracted the attention of several clubs across Europe, including Chelsea and Paris Saint Germain, as per the report.

Milinkovic-Savic is one of the most sought-after players in Europe, and thus, United should make a swift move for him this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has managed to turn the tides in United’s favour and successfully guided them to Champions League qualification. They have been brilliant in the last few months, except for the FA Cup semifinals loss against Chelsea and ended the campaign as the third-best defensive side.

However, with the season coming to an end, the manager should further strengthen his side if they are to progress in the European competition and challenge for various titles in the next season. And bringing in reinforcements would help them improve their squad depth.

Milinkovic-Savic could bring a balance to United’s midfield

At the moment, United have three central midfielders in their ranks. Fred and Scott McTominay produced their best in the absence of Paul Pogba and had been key figures in United’s turnaround. However, the return of Pogba from a long absence did boost the Red Devils’ squad and they were able to perform at a higher level since the restart.

Bringing in Milinkovic-Savic would further bolster their midfield ranks. He is more experienced than McTominay and his inclusion would bring in healthy competition, which would in turn work for better for the team.

The 25-year-old has featured in 36 league games so far, scoring 7 goals and providing 6 assists and United can expect goals from him in the middle of the park.

Given his recent form, he can form a strong partnership with Bruno Fernandes and Pogba in midfield. Though United have done well with Fred and McTominay, the Serbian international brings in more fluidity and productivity than the two. And Solskjaer can do well with one more midfielder.
