Why Sergio Reguilon could solve the left-back issues of Arsenal
As per Spanish Publication ABC (h/t Daily Star), Arsenal have made contacts with Real Madrid to sign left-back Sergio Reguilon in the summer.
Reguilon, 22, is a product of Real Madrid’s youth academy. He was previously sent on loan to UD Logrones to improve his game time. On his return, he featured regularly in the Segunda Division before making a breakthrough in the last campaign.
After making 14 La Liga appearances for Los Blancos, he was once again sent on loan last summer. Currently, plying his trade with Sevilla, the youngster has been impressive and has also received rave reviews for his performances. The report also suggests that Reguilon has attracted as many as ten clubs this season.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have performed better in the latter stages of the campaign. The arrival of Mikel Arteta has brought positivity into the squad. Since New Year, the Gunners haven’t lost a league game, as they are currently 9th in the league standings.
However, they have been inconsistent from the start of the campaign and the manager needs to bring in several reinforcements if they are to do better next campaign. One area where Arteta should focus on strengthening is the defensive unit.
David Luiz was brought in last summer as a replacement for Laurent Koscielny but the Brazilian has not lived up to the expectations. He has been error-prone, which has cost the Gunners a lot.
Sokratis and Shkodran Mustafi have also failed to do well. Though Pablo Mari was brought in last January on loan, he has not received enough chances to show his skills. Hence, it is obvious that a centre-back is necessary for the team.
Left-back Reguilon could be a future investment for Arsenal
Apart from that, Arsenal also need to bring in a left-back to strengthen their backline. Summer signing Kieran Tierney and Sead Kolasinac have struggled with injuries throughout the campaign. They have also not proven to be at their best when they have received their opportunities.
As a result, the manager turned towards young Bukayo Saka to carry on the duties on the left side of the defence. And the teenager has done well so far, putting in match-winning performances on several occasions. However, he has just one year left in his contract and is yet to sign a new deal. And the Gunners fear he could move away from Emirates this summer, as per the report.
In that regard, signing Reguilon would be a wise decision by the club. The Spaniard is a natural left-back and has been impressive on his loan spell with Sevilla so far. In 22 La Liga games, he has racked up 1 goal and 2 assists, and has all the attributes of a modern-day left-back.
The Spaniard has gone from strength to strength in the last two seasons and his inclusion would bring competition at left-back. His arrival would help Arteta deploy Bukayo Saka in his favoured left-wing role.

Verdict
The Real Madrid loanee is just 22 and has already proved his worth at a higher level. And with the right opportunities, he could be one of the best in the business. Thus, the Gunners should be able to enjoy his services in the long run.
