Why Sergio Reguilon to Everton would bolster their defence

According to Sky Sports, Everton have moved ahead in the race to sign Real Madrid youngster Sergio Reguilon, who just finished his loan spell with Sevilla. The report suggests that the English outfit have tabled an £18m bid for the left-back.

Reguilon, 23, is a product of Real Madrid’s youth system and was sent on loan to UD Logrones before being promoted to Los Blancos’ senior set-up last summer. Though he excelled in his debut season in the top-flight, he found opportunities rare to come by due to the big names in the squad.

The youngster was sent on loan to Sevilla for the 2019/20 campaign and he immediately made an impact on the squad. He showed his brilliance with Sevilla this season, helping them qualify for the Champions League.

However, in Madrid, he could find it hard to get regular game time due to the emergence of Ferland Mendy. Thus, Everton should seize the opportunity and secure the services of the Spaniard at the earliest.

Reguilon could add depth to Everton’s backline

Everton’s defence has not been up to the mark and it is clear that the manager should focus on strengthening the backline. And one key area where reinforcements should be brought in is at left-back.

English veteran Leighton Baines has decided to hang up his boots, leaving Everton with only one option at left-back in former Barcelona man Lucas Digne. The French defender was one of the few best players in the squad, as he finished with 7 assists in the league.

They did sign Niels Nkounkou but the youngster is inexperienced and needs to develop. Thus, they should bring in someone who already has some experience at a high level.

In that regard, signing Reguilon would be a fantastic option for the club. Last season, he made 22 appearances for Los Blancos and contributed with three assists in all competitions. The youngster continued with the fine form this season, managing to score 2 goals and 4 assists for Sevilla on loan.

The youngster is highly talented and has improved a lot. His inclusion to Ancelotti’s squad would definitely bring in healthy competition, whilst also adding depth to the squad. And he could be crucial for the Toffees if he is able to replicate the same form.

Verdict

With limited quality, it is clear that Everton are in dire need of left-backs to support Digne. And Reguilon has been in fine form this term. He could provide them with some much-needed quality and could also go on to represent them in the long run. Thus, signing the Spanish youngster would be a fantastic move, which could be helpful for both the club and the player.
