According to The Star, Sheffield United are considering offering a new contract to Irish left-back Enda Stevens.
Stevens, 29, came through Cherry Orchard FC’s youth system and moved to Aston Villa in 2012. After struggling to claim a spot for himself at Villa Park, he went on several loan spells before joining Portsmouth in the summer of 2015.
He was a regular starter at Fratton Park, helping them to the League Two play-offs in his debut season and his impressive performances with the club earned him a move to Bramall Lane in 2017. Since then, he has been in fine form for the Blades, helping them get promoted to the Premier League.
This season, he has featured in all 27 games for the Blades, scoring 2 goals and providing 2 assists and has also been a force to reckon with during defensive situations. Hence, it would be a good decision to reward him with a new contract for his tireless service to the club.
Meanwhile, Chris Wilder’s men have been in sublime form in the top-flight despite being just promoted to the top-flight last summer. They have been excellent in almost every area on the pitch and are currently 8th in the league standings, pushing to qualify for Europe.
Their defence has been outstanding throughout the campaign, conceding just 25 goals in 27 games. They have also helped in keeping 9 clean sheets, a better defensive record than some of the top clubs in England.
Wilder had only one left-back at his disposal earlier in the campaign in Enda Stevens before Jack Robinson was signed in January. Apart from defending, he has been excellent while joining the team’s attack and has contributed with 2 goals and assists each after an impressive 4 goals and 7 assists last campaign.
The 29-year-old is one of the best players for the Blades and still has the energy to play for a few more years. His presence would be a huge boost to the team and his experience would be impactful if Sheffield are to continue going strong in the top-flight.
The Irish international has missed just two league games in total in the last two seasons and his importance to the team is highly valued.
Though the Blades made a left-back signing in January, it is clear that Stevens would be their first-choice and he has the ability to play at a higher level. He is a versatile player as he is capable of playing in the midfield too and could be key in Sheffield United’s future endeavours.
Therefore, the decision to offer the former Aston Villa man a new contract is the best decision by the club as they can enjoy his excellence for a few more years.
