Why Sheffield United should avoid a move for Andy Carroll
According to The Star, former Sunderland defender Nedum Onuoha feels that Sheffield United should make a move for Andy Carroll. Onuoha was of the belief that Carroll would have a point to prove and that the Blades could benefit from his presence to give them some aerial threat.
Sheffield United have struggled massively this season
The Blades have been hit hard this season in terms of results in contrast to last season. They have been able to scrape just the one win and two draws from their 19 games so far and have a rather concerning -22 goal difference.
Nothing they have done has paid off and it pretty much looks like they are going to be in a relegation dogfight come the second half of the season. It was only recently that they bagged their first win of the season against Newcastle.
They have scored the second-fewest goals (10) this season and their strikers haven’t been prolific. Only David McGoldrick has managed to score 6 goals. From the looks of it, Sheffield could immediately do with some reinforcements in the forward line.
Andy Carroll is not the right option
It may seem like Andy Carroll is a decent option given his reputation in English football over the last decade or so. However, this is not the same forward that burst on to the scene as a youngster. The former England international’s career has been blighted by several injuries that have prevented him from fulfilling the promise his early potential indicated.
It’s not that Sheffield lack forwards. In fact they have quite an overstocked line of them who haven’t been firing. They have the likes of David McGoldrick, Oliver McBurnie, Billy Sharp, Lys Mousset and new signing Rhian Brewster. Adding another misfiring forward like Carroll to that department seems rather unnecessary.

Carroll may come with his strengths as a classic number nine giving the Blades a different approach to games but he is horribly out of form. There seems to be no plus point to signing him as he is pretty much on his last legs and cannot provide the clinical edge Sheffield need.
The club may look like they need another forward but Carroll is clearly not the right choice for that role and they should avoid going for him.
