Why Sheffield United should take a gamble on Leon Dajaku
As per the Guardian (h/t The Shields Gazette), Sheffield United are interested in signing Bayern Munich youngster Leon Dajaku ahead of the new campaign.
The report suggests that the Blades are hoping to take the German on a loan spell but they would face competition to secure his services as Championship side Swansea City are also keen to sign him.
Profile
Born in Germany, Dajaku came through the ranks of Stuttgart’s youth system and excelled with the club’s youth sides. He finished as the top scorer with 23 goals in 21 games in the U17 Bundesliga back in 2017/18 and also went on to lift the U19 German Cup title with Die Roten.
He joined Bayern Munich II’s squad, who play in the third-tier of German football last summer and went on to help the team lift the league title last season. He also made his senior bow in the 2019/20 campaign after impressing with the reserve squad.
He has also represented Germany at various age groups from U17 to U19 and is yet to make a start for the U20 squad.
Dajaku could provide depth in the wide areas for Sheffield United
The Blades were brilliant throughout the last season and beat all odds to finish 9th in the league standings. However, the attacking unit scored just 39 goals in 38 games, which is not up to the standards of the league and they need to do better if they are to qualify for the Europa League.
Billy Sharp, David McGoldrick, Lys Mousset, and Oliver McBurnie are the four forwards available at Chris Wilder’s disposal. Apart from them, the Blades have just one natural winger in Callum Robinson, who spent last season on loan with West Brom. Thus, they need to bring in a winger this summer.
In that regard, Dajaku would be a viable option for the club. The German youth international is highly talented and managed to rack up 4 goals and 4 assists in 29 3.Liga games. Though he is unproven at a high level, the Blades should take a chance with the teenager.
Despite his tender age (19), he has broken into Bayern’s first-team and that shows he could get better with experience. His inclusion would definitely add depth to the wide areas as he is capable of operating on either flank.

Verdict
With limited options in the wide areas, it is clear that Sheffield United are in dire need of wingers. And Dajaku could come in handy for the manager if he opts to rotate his squad. Thus, they should manage to lure the German to Bramall Lane this summer and improve their squad depth.
