Why Celtic should make a move for Martin Boyle

Pundit Kris Commons has urged Celtic to make a move for Hibernian star Martin Boyle in the on-going transfer window, as per The Herald Scotland.

Boyle, 27, joined Montrose FC’s U20 squad from Lewis United in the summer of 2008 and made 88 appearances for the club’s senior team, scoring 37 goals and providing 16 assists before joining Dundee FC. In January 2015, Hibs signed him initially on loan before making his move permanent in the following summer.

Since then, he has been a regular member of the squad and also played a key role in helping his side get promoted to the top-flight in Scottish football. Boyle has been in sensational form for the Hibs in the last few seasons and was instrumental in the club’s Scottish Cup win in 2015/16. However, he has just one year left on his contract with the club and thus, Celtic should look to snap him up at the earliest.

The Hoops, meanwhile, have got off to a good start in their quest for the 10th league title in a row as they beat Hamilton Academical 5-1 last weekend. Neil Lennon’s men have been brilliant so far and are aiming to continue with their dominance in Scotland.

However, there are some key areas that need to be strengthened this summer and the manager needs to bring in reinforcements if they are to maintain consistency. With the transfer window open until October, they should look to strengthen the squad.

Boyle could provide depth in the wide areas for Celtic

One significant area Neil Lennon should focus on strengthening is the wings. At the moment, only three natural wingers are available at Lennon’s disposal. Mohamed Elyounoussi, who struggled with injuries last season, has returned to starting XI.

However, Maryan Shved was not picked up for the squad and Mikey Johnston is recovering from a calf injury after undergoing surgery. This leaves Celtic with just one natural winger in the squad. Thus, they need to bring in a winger in the summer and Boyle would be an ideal solution for the Hoops.

The Australian international has already proved himself in the Premiership in the last few years. He racked up 5 goals and 7 assists in the 2017/18 season and followed it with 4 goals and 3 assists in the following campaign. Last season, he racked up 5 goals and assists each and helped his side finish 6th in the Premiership table.

At the moment, midfielder James Forrest has been deployed on the right side of the attack and Boyle’s inclusion would provide Celtic with a natural solution in the wide areas. He could be a crucial player for the Hoops if he is able to replicate the form he has shown in the last few seasons.

Verdict

With limited options in the wings, it is clear that Celtic are in dire need of wingers. Boyle has been impressive in the league and could be a fantastic addition to Lennon’s squad and could provide them with some much-needed goals.
