Why signing George Honeyman could be a bargain deal for Sheffield Wednesday

What a difference two years can make! Sunderland are down to League One and their financial woes mean they are likely to lose the top cream of their squad, one of whom is George Honeyman. A bright spark in a woeful Sunderland side that dropped from the second-tier last season, Honeyman won’t be short of potential suitors.

According to The Chronicle, Championship clubs Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa are interested in signing the Prudhoe-born midfielder. The 23-year-old made 42 Championship appearances for Sunderland last term, starting 37 times with five cameos. Honeyman’s 6 goals and 2 assists were not enough as a below-par Sunderland were relegated to League One.

Honeyman has already proven himself in the Championship and he would be a valuable addition to The Owls. Through his agent, Margaret Byrne, the talented and promising midfielder has already expressed his desire to play in the Championship or Premier League. And Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has confirmed as much.

With just a year left on his current deal, Sunderland might be forced to cash in on the player. For the right price, the Owns could lure Honeyman away from Stadium of Light, where he has spent his entire career.

Honeyman has progressed massively last season and he could be influential in the Sheffield Wednesday midfield. In fact, his presence could also enable them to compete for a playoff spot next season. The Englishman has bags of energy and his ability to play anywhere across the midfield makes him an exciting prospect.

Having joined the Sunderland academy at the age of 10, the recent drop down the division must force the youngster to reconsider his options and even the most loyal fans would find it hard to judge him if he moved away from the Sunderland.

Sheffield Wednesday have been eyeing Honeyman for some time now and this is their opportunity to swoop in. Amid claims of financial struggles, the Owls should do everything in their power to land his signature. The sale is likely to be sanctioned after EFL approves Donald’s takeover at the club, as per The Sun.

Goerge Honeyman has simply outgrown Sunderland and League One. He needs to take the next step to develop his career further. Sheffield Wednesday should go all out and wrap up a deal for the tough-tackling midfielder, who averaged 1.1 shots per game last season.
