According to Daily Mail, Jorge Fernandes has attracted the attention of Southampton. The Portuguese defender has impressed for Vitoria Guimares this season. A lot of other Premier League clubs too, such as Fulham and Newcastle have shown interest in the Vitoria Guimaraes man.
A youth product of FC Porto, Fernandes joined their academy in 2006. Within 4 years he was promoted to the U-15s side. Through successive promotions in successive seasons, he made his way up to the senior team in 2018. However, he was soon loaned out for the remainder of the season to Tondela.
On his return, he was again loaned out for a season to Turkish side Kasimpasa and he played 22 times for them. After returning, Porto sanctioned a permanent sale for Fernandes to Vitoria Guimaraes at the start of this season.
Since then, he has impressed for the side in his 11 appearances so far. Fernandes is also a regular for the Portuguese youth teams but has yet to feature for the senior side.
Southampton have started this season on a real positive note. They are still 7th in the table winning 7 of their 14 league games so far. It has been built on the bedrock of a defence manned by Jan Bednarek and Jannik Vestergaard. They have been in great form this season and it has resulted in new recruit Mohammed Salisu not even featuring once this season.
However, Fernandes is a rather talented young defender who can be a huge long-term prospect for any side. Vitoria are holding out for £16million, which seems very reasonable given the current economic climate in football due to the pandemic.
Southampton should see Fernandes as a good investment opportunity. The player can be an understudy for a few seasons and can make the step up once he is ready. At 23, he has caught the attention of several clubs, which should tell you that he is talented. The Saints should try to make use of this huge opportunity and try to secure his services.
