Why Rangers should sell Graham Dorrans if they get the chance
Graham Dorrans was signed by Rangers last summer from Norwich City and he endured an injury-plagued season at the Ibrox. The 31-year-old Glasgow native, who can play across the midfield, only featured 11 times as he chipped in with 5 goals and 3 assists.
However, he made an excellent start to life with Rangers as he made his debut against Motherwell, scoring twice as the Gers ran out 2-1 winners.
Dorrans has been a mainstay in the treatment room and is already a doubt ahead of next season after picking up an injury in Rangers’ training camp in Spain. When fit, Dorrans could be an alternative option in Rangers’ midfield but he is a liability given his injury record from last season.
Steven Gerrard has already sanctioned a loan deal for Jason Holt to Fleetwood Town. Now, only Greg Docherty and Ex-Liverpool duo of Jordan Rossiter and Ovie Ejaria will offer competition to Dorrans.
The veteran midfielder is yet to rediscover his form from the 2009/10 season that saw him score 18 goals in 52 appearances for West Bromwich Albion. That was a personal record in a senior career spanning 14 years.
But in the current scenario, Rangers should cash in on Dorrans if they get the chance to. His sale would free up funds for Gerrard to rebuild the squad ahead of the new campaign.
Going forward, Gerrard’s main objective must be to close the gap between Rangers and Celtic as the former try to end the latter’s dominance in Scotland. To do so, Gerrard must strive to assemble a squad that can stay fit throughout the season and avoid long-term injuries.
To that end, there will always be doubts about Dorrans. When Dorrans returned to action after several months on the sidelines, he looked like a shadow of his former self. In contrast, Holt might now not have the same skills as Dorrans but he was a mainstay in the Rangers team since joining in 2015.

While Holt’s reliability could have been an asset for the Gers next season, the same can’t be said for Dorrans. It will be frustrating for Gerrard that Dorrans has picked up “the issue with his knee” right after sanctioning Holt’s loan move. Nevertheless, the Gers should be ready to listen to incoming offers for Dorrans this summer.
