Mercury Cougar Eliminator Was Built to Increase Sales

When the sales of the original Mercury Cougar didn’t meet the expectations, the manufacturers decided to launch this special edition. When other muscle cars dominated the races and sales, the Mercury Cougar Eliminator was launched and had minimum sales which disappointed them. It was also built to compete against the muscle cars of Chevrolet and Ford. The mission was successful as the sales of regular Mercury Cougar were increased and it sold almost 3 million units. The Cougar Eliminator played a vital role in the increased sales of other models.

Big-block V8 Engines

The Mercury Cougar Eliminator was a performance-oriented package. These models arrived with both small-block and big-block V8 engines like 390 CID (6.4L) V8, 428 CID (7.0L) V8 Cobra Jet, and 429 CID (7.0L) V8 Super Cobra Jet. As a result, the performance was incredible in both streets and tracks. It was a front-engine layout vehicle with rear-wheel drive. Mercury Cougar Eliminator was available with 4-speed manual, 3-speed manual, and 3-speed automatic transmissions. The engines delivered excellent handling with a top speed of 140mph.

Mercury Cougar Eliminator looked exquisite in all angles. The styling featured hood scoop,  functional matte spoilers, fastback roofline, and split vertical grille. With racing stripes and decals, the designs were enhanced. Cougar Eliminator’s hockey stick stripes and shaker hooder scoop featured in some models. Overall, the Mercury Cougar Eliminator had an aggressive styling with amazing designs.

Mercury Cougar Eliminator had bucket seats with a center console. The performance was enhanced by Heavy-duty Springs and Ram Air Induction. It had features of regular muscle cars of the 70s. Hidden headlights, AC, Power brakes, and Woodgrain complete the remaining features.

Being a rare gem, the Cougar Eliminator has a great collector value. In two years, only a total of 4500+ units were sold which makes this an iconic vehicle. The price of Mercury Cougar Eliminator was $3,000 USD when it was launched.  This might have been a little expensive at that time as the inflation was different. Today, it is priced between $25,000 USD to $40,000 USD. Although it’s expensive, the Cougar Eliminator will be an ultimate vehicle for its designs and technology. Cougar Eliminator is a rare and unique model from Mercury.
