Danny Rose is on loan at Newcastle United
According to Football Insider (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur are willing to listen to offers for out-of-favour left-back Danny Rose. Spurs have decided to offload the 29-year-old, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Newcastle.
Rose, who will be out of contract with the North London side in 2021, joined them as a teenager from Leeds United back in 2007. Since then, he has made over 214 appearances for them and was a part of Tottenham’s Champions League final squad last year.
The left-footed full-back has scored 9 goals and provided 24 assists during his time there and was a key player under former boss Mauricio Pochettino. However, he saw himself fall out of favour with new boss Jose Mourinho, under whom he played just one league game before being offloaded to rivals Newcastle in January.
With his contract at St. James’ Park now set to expire at the end of this season, Tottenham have decided to listen to offers as low as £5million for Rose, who was once valued at around £50million.
Mourinho’s Spurs have struggled defensively throughout this season that saw them suffer a slip in their rankings after their exploits in the European competition last season.
Rose, whose performances had suffered a dip, saw himself limited to just 12 league appearances this term. Despite Tottenham’s depth at left-back, Mourinho’s arrival saw veteran Jan Vertonghen being shifted to the wing-back position ahead of the out-of-form Rose.
This season also witnessed Spurs youngster Ryan Sessegnon being offered the left-back role by Mourinho as the Portuguese boss kept searching for a preferred back-four combination to better his side’s displays in the league.
Also, now with 27-year-old Ben Davies back to action following his return from an ankle injury, Rose’s chances of making a first-team appearance seem increasingly limited in the coming days.
Having lost his faith completely under Mourinho, Rose looks surplus to the club’s requirements at the moment. Hence, Tottenham’s decision to offload the Englishman this summer seems like a wise move.
Despite Spurs’ dearth of established left-backs, Mourinho was clearly unimpressed by Rose, which is why he loaned the Englishman out. Keeping him at the club any longer seems pointless. Tottenham can rather sell him and make use of that money in the transfer market.
