Manchester United must sign a new centre-back this summer and they have reportedly identified Diego Godin as a possible target. The report further states that the player could be available for a fee of £18million, despite being contracted with Atletico till the end of next season.
The 32-year-old is immensely experienced, having played virtually at every level. From Champions League finals to World Cup knockouts, Godin has done it all. He is a no-nonsense defender and Jose Mourinho must acquire his services this summer.
Mourinho has struggled to find the perfect centre-back combination at United so far. If we cogitate, the issues are usually related to injuries picked up by first-choice players like Eric Bailly and Phil Jones. The likes of Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo are simply not good enough, which makes it challenging for the manager.
If we culminate the above factors, the Red Devils do need a player who can stabilize their back line. And considering Godin’s wealth of experience, he will do exactly that. Not only is he a fantastic defender but he is known to be a fit athlete who hardly misses games during a particular season.
Godin is a natural leader at the heart of the defence for Uruguay and Atletico Madrid. He is rugged and has the physique to shrug off strikers with ease. The 32-year-old’s physical strength also makes him quite a threat in both boxes.
Talking about his stats from last season, Godin averaged 1.7 tackles and 2 interceptions per game. In adjunction, he won an average of 1.9 aerial duels in both boxes. The South American is great on the ball, thus providing an extra option for playmaking from the back.
If we take an elaborative look at his career, the Uruguayan has been a part of two Champions League finals. In addition to that, he is a two-time Europa League winner and a La Liga champion.
Even though Godin is getting past his prime age, he will be the ideal solution for United on a short-term basis. He would bring in some much-needed solidity and leadership at the back. His performances in the ongoing World Cup might increase his price tag but if they can afford it, the Red Devils must swoop in for the defender.
