Stoke City endured a dismal campaign which saw them finish 19th in the league last season, relegating them to the Championship division. The club not only conceded the most number of goals but were also thumped by almost all the top-six clubs.

In fact, Paul Lambert’s men were all over the place, with no real threat going forward and no solidity at the back. Xherdan Shaqiri was one of their few players who showed some kind of intent. The Swiss international made 36 appearances last season, scoring 8 goals and providing 7 assists.

He was Stoke’s shining light throughout the season, but his efforts were all in vain as the club ultimately failed to preserve their place in the Premier League. Now, having gotten relegated, the club must prepare to deal with a mass exodus of players.

Stoke have appointed Gary Rowett as their new boss and the coach must aim to bring them back to the Premier League. If he is to do so, he will need to fix the leaks in the Potters’ defence. Stoke have already lost Kurt Zouma to his parent club Chelsea, meaning they must sign a new centre-back to replace the Frenchman.

Sunderland defender Paddy McNair has reportedly attracted interest from the Potters. The 23-year-old, who can play in the defence as well as the midfield, has been on Rowett’s radar following Sunderland’s relegation to League One.

McNair missed most of the previous campaign as he was recovering from a cruciate knee injury, playing just 16 times and scoring four in his last five appearances. But the former Manchester United defender has shown growth and maturity in his game since his Old Trafford days. Furthermore, his versatility will make him seem like an appealing choice for Stoke.

As far as the Potters are concerned, they could utilize a man like him in their squad as they aim to return to the Premier League next season. The 23-year-old is also reportedly attracting interest from Middlesbrough but Rowett must do everything he can to acquire the youngster’s services this summer.

He would be a great addition to the Stoke squad and will certainly make them stronger at the back. Due to his versatility, McNair will also offer a lot while going forward. Thus, it is absolutely crucial for Stoke to sign him before any of the other clubs come fishing.
