Why it is time for Simon Mignolet to bid adieu to Liverpool and move to Napoli

As per a report by La Derniere Heure (h/t ESPN), Napoli are interested in signing out-of-favour Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who is currently earning wages in the region of £60,000-a-week. (Daily Express)

Although the English transfer window has slammed shut, Premier League clubs can still sell players to clubs from different leagues. And it looks like the Serie A outfit are set to lure Mignolet away.

The Naples-based outfit came quite close to winning the Italian top-flight last season but they fell short towards the end and Juventus beat them to it.

Since then, a lot of things have changed. Maurizio Sarri has moved to Chelsea and he has taken their midfield star, Jorginho, along with him. Going into the new season, Napoli must aim to carry on from where they left off. But that will be a tall order considering the number of changes they have been through.

Incidentally, the club had signed goalkeeper Alex Meret this summer but the 21-year-old has fractured his forearm, which will sideline him for the foreseeable future.

To that end, signing Mignolet does seem like a step in the right direction. His career at Liverpool has been through a rollercoaster of ups and downs but there have been times when the custodian worked wonders between the sticks.

Yes, he is currently going through a severe dip in form but a regular run of games in a different league and a new environment can turn things around for the Liverpool star. He could stay put at Anfield for another season or so but he must prioritize his career and move elsewhere before the European deadline on August 31st.

Liverpool have signed Alisson Becker from AS Roma and the Brazilian has certainly hit the ground running. He walked away with a clean sheet during the Reds’ season-opener as the Merseysiders wreaked havoc upon West Ham United, thrashing them 4-0.

It is evident that Alisson will be the first choice for the rest of the season and Loris Karius is expected to act as his deputy. Hence, it makes no sense for Mignolet to stick around with Liverpool.

Moving to Napoli will provide the Belgian with a brilliant opportunity to start afresh. And he must grasp it with both hands and bid adieu to Anfield.
