Serie A club Juventus are chasing Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso, according to Daily Mail. The left-back has made just 11 appearances for the Blues this season. Alonso has now been linked with joining his former manager Maurizio Sarri, with the duo winning the Europa League final last season.
Alonso, who earns £100,000-a-week currently, has not got the game time that he would have liked. Thus, he could be on his way out of the Stamford Bridge.
It is almost certain that Chelsea might offload one or both their left-backs this summer, especially with Chelsea monitoring left-backs in the transfer market.
Alonso doesn’t really fit into Lampard’s system and hasn’t been consistent in the defence. He is a better wing-back and a threat going forward.
The player also turns 30 very soon and age isn’t on his side. Both the club and player might not come to a common conclusion as the club is looking for a fresh name and a young talent, while Alonso at his peak would not want to be warming the bench.
However, Chelsea would be wise to sell him only if they sign a replacement. Else, Alonso’s departure would leave them shorthanded in that position despite the presence of Cesar Azpilicueta, who is capable of playing at left-back.
Alonso might be at his peak but if the manager has no plans for him, it is better for the club to sell him at this point of time for the right price. The 29-year-old still has a contract that runs until the summer of 2023 and would not want to spend time on the bench.
If Chelsea are unable to utilize the player and bring the best out of him, then it is in the best interest of both the club and the player to part ways. Also, this would be the best chance for Chelsea to sell him for a good sum as his value might go down with time, given he would grow older and his contract would be running out as well.
