Why Timo Werner would be the right choice to bolster Manchester United attack
As per Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are monitoring RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner ahead of the summer transfer window to bolster their attack.
Werner, 24, is a product of Stuttgart’s youth academy. He was promoted to the club’s senior set-up in 2013 and made a big impression that earned him a move to RB Leipzig. Since his arrival at Red Bull Arena, the diminutive striker has turned into a strong force.
He has been impressive in the last four years and has also helped his side qualify for the Champions League for the first time. His impressive performances have also attracted interest from Liverpool. The forward has also established himself as Germany’s first-choice and is one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.
United, meanwhile, have made progress in the latter stages of the season. After initially struggling to find a balance, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has managed to take his side to a respectable position. They have been brilliant in the past few months.
They have gone unbeaten in the last 11 games across all competitions, scoring 29 goals and conceding only twice. And there have been signs of improvement. The arrival of Bruno Fernandes has helped United as their creativity has been on par in recent times.
The Red Devils are currently 5th in the league table, just 3 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. They are hoping to qualify for the Champions League once the season resumes. They have also progressed in the Europa League and are still in the race to reach the finals of the FA Cup.
However, with the current season remaining unpredictable due to the pandemic, Solskjaer should look to bring in reinforcements to do better next season.
Timo Werner could be the future of Manchester United
One area the manager should look to strengthen is the centre-forward position. Marcus Rashford has been brilliant, scoring 14 goals before he got injured. But the Englishman operates mainly from the left flank.
Anthony Martial continued from where Rashford led and also played a significant role in the derby wins. Apart from them, United have Odion Ighalo and Mason Greenwood as strikers. While Ighalo is on loan from Shanghai Shenhua, the latter is still in his learning curve and cannot be depended upon for a whole season.
In that regard, signing Werner would make the Red Devils powerful in the attack. The German has been in sensational form, crossing the double-figure mark for goals in each of the last three seasons.
This term, he has taken his game to the next level and has already racked up 21 goals and 7 assists in 25 league games. His arrival would be a boost for Solskjaer’s side and he would definitely bring healthy competition to the forwards in the squad.
Verdict
At 24, Werner is at the right time of his life to take a step into the Premier League. And United would be assured of goals if they sign him. He has a lot more to offer at the highest level and the Red Devils should lure the German international to Old Trafford this summer.
