Along with PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot, who will also be a free agent in four months time, the hugely experienced Mexican international is expected to set the market on fire.
Spurs were linked with a move for the Mexican ahead of the January transfer window but the Lilywhites failed to strike a deal. They have done exceptionally well on all fronts this season but would need to freshen their squad up ahead of next season.
While they are quite well-stocked in the attack, lack of options in central midfield can come back to haunt them, with youngsters Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp being the only potential choices for Pochettino following the departure of Mousa Dembele to China.
Moussa Sissoko has struggled to perform consistently at the base of Tottenham’s midfield diamond, while Victor Wanyama continues to battle with recurrent injuries. Hence, Spurs are in dire need of an experienced face to shore up their midfield. And Porto’s Hector Herrera certainly fits the bill.
Known as an all-action, hard-working and tenacious midfielder, who is blessed with plenty of drive and determination, the Mexican international is comfortable in both holding and defensive roles in the middle of the park. A seasoned campaigner for Porto, the 28-year-old has accumulated 30 goals and 33 assists from 227 appearances for the Portuguese giants.
Herrera can add that stability to the Spurs’ midfield with his strength, energy, flawless passing and distribution. Furthermore, he has the ability to dictate the tempo of the game in the middle of the park.
The 28-year-old averages 48.2 passes per game with an accuracy percentage of 84.8, including 3.3 long balls, 2.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1 key pass per game in the Portuguese league this term, numbers that speak volumes of his well-rounded abilities as a central midfielder. (Whoscored.com)
To sum it up, Spurs need more quality and depth in their reserves to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Man City for the Premier League crown. They have been one of the most consistent performers in the league over the last three or four seasons, but the lack of transfer activity has hindered their rise to being the team in the country.
For that reason, an experienced player like Herrera would certainly be the answer to Pochettino’s prayers. Hence, they should lure the Mexican to north London by offering him a lucrative contract in the summer.
