Why Tottenham should go for Ben Godfrey in the summer

According to The Express, Tottenham are planning to raid Norwich City for their defender Ben Godfrey in the summer.

The report also suggests that Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is plotting an overhaul in his defence for the new season and Norwich’s young centre-back Godfrey is one among the many targets including Benfica’s Ruben Dias and Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake.

Godfrey, 22, rose through the ranks of York city’s youth system and enjoyed a swift rise since making his debut for his hometown team before joining Norwich City in January 2016.

The versatile defender made 36 appearances for Norwich last season, in what was his first campaign in the Championship after spending the 2017/18 season on loan at League One outfit Shrewsbury Town. And Godfrey has settled in the Premier League brilliantly at Carrow Road, playing in all the games before a torn knee ligament kept him out for several days.

With the England U21 international impressing in the top-flight, Tottenham must look to sign him in the summer transfer window. The Lilywhites brought in few attack-minded players last month in the likes of Steven Bergwijn and Gedson Fernandes and could have a busy summer window in order to make things perfect at the back.

Jose Mourinho has managed to lift them from further humiliation and they are currently 6th in the league table, hoping for a finish in the Champions League qualification spot. However, they have been uncharacteristically shaky at the back this season, with none of the central defenders showing consistency in their performance.

Jan Vertonghen has entered the final few months of his contract at White Hart Lane and could be on the move at the end of the season if he doesn’t extend his deal. Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez have not been up to the mark and so, Mourinho has to tighten up things at the back by bringing in Ben Godfrey.

The 22-year-old is extremely versatile as he can play on both sides of the central defence and also as a defensive midfielder. He has the potential to succeed in the Premier League and the Lilywhites should take advantage of that.

His impressive rise also earned him a call up to the English U21 squad and he made his debut last September.

Verdict

Godfrey has shown his ability to perform at a higher level and would be a valuable asset to the team if he is able to replicate the same form he has shown at Carrow Road. Therefore, Tottenham must go all out in the summer and sign Godfrey to bolster their defensive unit.
