Why Tottenham should make a move for Lucas Vazquez

According to Defensa Central (h/t The Express), Tottenham are interested in signing Real Madrid star Lucas Vazquez in the summer. The report also claims that the North Londoners are willing to pay £14.5m to secure the services of the winger.

Having risen through the ranks at Real Madrid’s youth system, Vasquez, 29, went on to enjoy a successful career with Los Blancos. He helped them win several trophies including two La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies. He has done well whenever he was called upon and has been much more than a substitute under Zinedine Zidane.

The Spaniard, however, struggled with injuries this term and could feature in just 18 league games for the La Liga champions this term. And, with just 11 months left on his contract with the club, the report suggests that he could be on the move. Thus, Tottenham should make an attempt to sign Vazquez at the earliest.

Vasquez could offer Tottenham a lot of options

The Lilywhites, meanwhile, have managed to reach the 7th position in the league standings after an abysmal start to the season under Mauricio Pochettino. Jose Mourinho’s arrival has brought them back near their best. However, their inconsistency has cost them a place in the Champions League.

With the season almost done and dusted, the manager should now focus on strengthening the squad by bringing in new faces. Mourinho should make sure there is depth in every area so that they don’t face limitations at any point in the next campaign.

And Real Madrid winger Vazquez would be a smart addition to the squad. The Spanish international is capable of operating anywhere on the right-side of the pitch. A winger by trade, he has also done a decent job at right-back, deputizing for Dani Carvajal on several occasions.

At the moment, Tottenham have just one right-back in Serge Aurier, who has not been at his best. Though he has helped in the team’s attack, he has failed defensively on several occasions. And Vazquez would bring in healthy competition for that spot if he joins Tottenham.

At the same time, he is capable of making the right-wing spot for himself as Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela are not in their best form either. The 29-year-old has made 336 career appearances and his experience can come in handy for the manager, who would have a lot of options to choose from.

Verdict

In the last few years, the Spaniard has won several trophies and would know a thing or two of the winning mentality. And Tottenham need experienced campaigners in their squad if they are to challenge for titles. Thus, they should make a move for Vazquez, who is a versatile player and is capable of making a difference.
