According to Daily Mail, Tottenham have made inquiries over the possibility of signing Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the summer.
Milinkovic-Savic, 25, came through the youth ranks of Vojvodina Novi Sad’s youth system in his homeland and moved to Genk in the summer of 2014. After an impressive season in the Jupiler League, the midfielder was signed by Lazio.
He instantly became an integral member of the squad and has established himself as one of the best midfielders in Serie A. Since his arrival, the Serbian played a key role in the club’s Italian Cup-winning campaign last season and two Italian Super Cups. And his impressive performances have also attracted Manchester United and Chelsea, as per the report.
Tottenham, meanwhile have endured a disappointing campaign so far. They have been dumped out of all the other cup competitions, whilst finding themselves at 8th place in the league standings. Jose Mourinho’s arrival got them off to a good start but the results didn’t last long and they are on the verge of losing out on the Champions League spot next season.
The injuries to Harry Kane, Heung Min-Son and summer signing Steven Bergwijn have played a major role in their lacklustre campaign. They have scored just 47 goals so far, which is less compared to the top teams in the league.
The defensive unit has also been at its worst, conceding 40 goals in the campaign and it is clear that a central defender is necessary for the Lilywhites. However, their midfield has also struggled to take charge, with the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Winks not being able to make a difference.
Moussa Sissoko has struggled with injuries and Gedson Fernandes was signed on loan in January. But the Portuguese youngster has barely got a chance to make an impact. Thus, the manager should bring reinforcements to the midfield. In that regard, signing Milinkovic-Savic would do them a world of good.
Milinkovic-Savic is one of the best midfielders in Europe and has scored a handful of goals in each of the last 5 campaigns. This term, he has already racked up 4 goals and 5 assists in 25 league games and could provide Mourinho’s side with goals from the midfield.
Tottenham’s midfielders have combined to produce just 4 goals and 3 assists so far with all of them coming from the two French stars. And Milinkovic-Savic’s inclusion would also bring healthy competition within the squad.
The Serbian is 25 and has a lot more to offer at the highest level. He could provide Tottenham with the much-needed depth and could also bring stability to their midfield given his recent successful run of form. Thus, the North Londoners should make a move for Milinkovic-Savic this summer.
