Why Tottenham should make a renewed effort to sign Vedat Muriqi in summer

According to The Sun, Tottenham tried to sign Vedat Muriqi last month by placing a £20m bid for the striker but the deal didn’t materialize and he stayed put at Fenerbahce.

The report suggests that Jose Mourinho was desperate to add a striker to his squad last month, with the club looking at several options including Edinson Cavani, Willian Jose and Ismail Slimani. But they could not bring in a replacement for the injured Harry Kane.

Therefore, in the summer, the Lilywhites should add depth to their squad by renewing interest in Muriqi, who has been in fine form for his club this season.

Muriqi, 25, who started his career in Albania with KF Liria, moved to Turkey in the summer of 2014. Since then, he has played for different clubs in the country and is currently plying his trade with Super Lig giants Fenerbahce.

Last season, the Prizren-born Kosovo international scored 17 goals in 34 league games for Caykur Rizespor and finished as the second-highest scorer in the league behind Mbaye Diagne. He has continued that form into this season for the 19-time Turkish champions.

Meanwhile, Mourinho’s side managed to beat Manchester City 2-0 at the weekend and are currently 5th in the Premier League standings. Though they have managed to climb up the ladder, they still face limitations in several departments within their squad.

Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn was signed last month and he scored the opening goal against Pep Guardiola’s side. They also made Giovanni Lo Celso’s move permanent and he has done quite decently.

However, the Lilywhites have only Harry Kane to lead the attack and his injury has put them in a bad situation. Above that, they failed to sign a replacement for the rest of the season. Therefore, Mourinho must pursue Muriqi in the summer to strengthen his options up front.

The 25-year-old is a natural centre-forward and has already found the back of the net 12 times this season while providing 4 assists. And the report claims that he fits the profile of a striker that Mourinho wants on his side.

Muriqi would be a valuable addition to the squad, which has only one target man in the ranks. Since playing in the Super Lig from the last campaign, he has been excellent for the club, helping them to 5th place in the table this term.

Verdict

At 25, Muriqi would be a viable option for Tottenham as far as their attacking unit is concerned.

Therefore, Tottenham must make another attempt to sign the striker and lure him to England when the summer transfer window arrives.
