Why Tottenham should reignite their interest in Matias Vecino

According to Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur have once again been offered the chance to sign £18million-rated Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino.

Back in January, the 28-year-old Uruguayan was linked with a move to Spurs, when Christian Eriksen went the other way. However, no deal materialised, with Vecino staying put at Inter.

A key player for Inter in the last couple of years, Vecino has made 23 appearances for Antonio Conte’s side this season and has three goals and one assist to his name so far. Having moved from rivals Fiorentina in the summer of 2017, Vecino has played 94 matches across all competitions for Inter Milan to date.

He has also scored a total of 11 goals and provided 6 assists in the process, signifying his worth within the current Inter Milan line-up. Vecino, meanwhile, is familiar to the Tottenham fans for heading a late winner against their side in a Champions League group game last season.

Tottenham will have an experienced midfielder in Vecino

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is in need of reinforcements in the middle after his side’s dismal show in the league this season. Despite having as many as 9 midfielders in their ranks, Tottenham have failed to put up a decent show. This has seen the side slip to a lowly 8th in the league table.

Also, veteran defender Jan Vertonghen’s uncertain future at the club means defensive midfielder Eric Dier will most probably be moved to a centre-back role next season. That leaves the side with just one defensive midfielder in Oliver Skipp.

However, he is just 19 and lacks big-game experience. That said, Tottenham could really do with an experienced campaigner like Vecino, who plays in a deeper role for Inter Milan. A veteran of 189 Serie A games, there is no questioning Vecino’s experience. He has already proven himself already at Inter, and former sides Fiorentina and Empoli.

His ability to function anywhere in the midfield would also be an added benefit for a struggling side like Tottenham. Hence, they should once again reignite their interest in him.

Verdict

Though Tottenham have enough back-up in their midfield, none of them has put up a decent show until now this season. Hence, bringing in an experienced customer like Vecino will only add more strength to their squad. His arrival will also offer Mourinho plenty of options in the middle according to the team’s requirements.
