According to Daily Star, the agent of Willian Jose revealed that Tottenham were interested in signing the striker in January but a deal didn’t materialize and the Brazilian stayed put.
Jose, 28, who had previously worn the shirts of 8 clubs, joined Real Sociedad in the summer of 2016. Since then, he has been a regular member of the squad and has contributed with 54 goals in 138 appearances for the Spanish outfit.
The former Real Madrid man has been in fine form in the past three years, reaching double figures in terms of scoring goals. He is one of the most consistent members of the team and was the club’s top scorer in two of the last three campaigns. His impressive performances also attracted interest from Manchester United, as per the report.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have failed miserably since reaching the finals of the Champions League last term. Things seemed to have improved when Jose Mourinho took over in November. But they were once again struggling prior to the season getting suspended.
The downslide in Tottenham’s form coincided with the absence of talisman Harry Kane, who has been out of action since the New Year due to a thigh injury.
Mourinho fell short of leaders upfront as the English ace was the only striker available in the squad. Brazilian Lucas Moura was handed the task of leading the attacking unit. But the former PSG forward failed to find the back of the net regularly in that period.
January signing Steven Bergwijn announced himself to the Premier League in fine fashion with a stunning strike against Manchester City. But an injury put him out on the sidelines as well. And Son Heung-min also underwent an arm surgery, in the meantime.
With a lack of depth in their attacking unit, the Lilywhites managed to score just 11 goals in 9 games since Kane’s absence. They lost 4 of these fixtures. Thus, the manager should bring in reinforcements to their attack if they are to do better in the next season. And Willian Jose would be a viable option.
The Brazilian has been in good nick this term, scoring 9 goals in 26 La Liga games so far and is the club’s top scorer. Given his form of the previous three campaigns, he would definitely be a huge boost to Mourinho’s squad if he joins them.
Given the lack of depth, Tottenham are in dire need of a striker. And Willian Jose would provide them with much-needed goals. Moreover, with Harry Kane’s future up in the air, adding to the attacking department is imperative for Mourinho. Thus, Spurs should reignite their interest in the former Santos FC man and lure him in the summer.
