Why Tottenham should revive interest in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

According to Evening Standard, Tottenham were interested in signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in January but a move didn’t materialize and the midfielder stayed put at St. Mary’s Stadium.

Hojbjerg, 24, came through the ranks of FC Copenhagen and Brondby’s youth system in Denmark. He was later signed by Bayern Munich, for who he played for two years before switching to Southampton in the summer of 2016.

Since then, he has become a regular member of the Saints and has gone on to led the side. He has been impressive since his switch to London and thus, Tottenham should revive their interest in the Danish international this summer.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have endured a disappointing campaign so far. Jose Mourinho’s men have been dumped out of all the other cup competitions and also find themselves at 8th place in the league standings. They are almost in an unlikely situation to qualify for the Champions League.

The injuries to Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and winter signing Steven Bergwijn has played a part in the team’s dismal performance. While the Lilywhites have scored 47 goals this season, the defensive unit has been at its worst.

They have conceded 40 goals in the league so far, which is the joint-highest among the teams in the top half of the table. The central defence has been shaky, whereas the full-backs have also not been at their best.

While it is clear that Mourinho needs to make changes in the attacking unit, the manager should also look to shuffle the backline if they are to do better in the next season.

Hojbjerg could bring stability to Tottenham’s midfield

As much as Tottenham needs to reinforce their attacking and defensive unit, their midfield also needs some tinkering. Summer signing Tanguy Ndombele has not been the same he once used to be for Lyon.

The Frenchman has endured a torrid campaign so far. Moussa Sissoko has struggled with injuries for the majority of the 2019/20 season and Giovani Lo Celso has also failed to contribute to the team. In the defensive midfield role, Eric Dier has lost his good form and seems to be far from his best.

Harry Winks, who was expected to make the progress, has also performed below par and the whole midfield has not made an impact. In that regard, signing Hojbjerg would do them a world of good and they could rely on him to keep their midfield ticking given his recent performances.

Hojbjerg has been one of the influential figures in Southampton’s solid performances of late. He has mainly featured in a deeper role and has led the team brilliantly so far. He could be a valuable addition to Tottenham’s midfield, whilst also adding the much-needed depth.

Verdict

Tottenham need to get rid of their fringe players and should look to bring in midfielders to perform better next season. Given the Denmark international’s performances in the last two years, he should be targeted to boost their midfield. Thus, they must once again look to make a move for Hojbjerg this summer.
