Why Tottenham should revive their interest in Stefan Savic

Back in May, Mundo Deportivo (h/t Daily Mail) suggested that Tottenham were considering a move for Atletico Madrid star Stefan Savic this summer.

The report claimed that a deal could happen if the Lilywhites were willing to part with £17m for the Montenegro international. However, they could face tough competition to secure his services as the La Liga outfit are keen to keep him at Wanda Metropolitano.

The 29-year-old flourished through the ranks of BSK Borca’s youth system in Serbia and joined Partizan Belgrade, from where Manchester City picked him up in the summer of 2011. However, he has a torrid time in England, making just 11 appearances.

However, he revived his career with Fiorentina and made 108 appearances for the Italian outfit before joining Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015. Since then, he has been a regular member of the squad and helped his reach the finals of the Champions League in his debut season with Los Colchoneros. He also played a key role in their Europa League-title winning campaign.

Last season, he struggled with injuries but returned to claim the centre-back spot for himself and was instrumental in taking his side the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Savic could be a short-term defensive solution for Tottenham

At the moment, four centre-backs are available at Jose Mourinho’s disposal. Toby Alderweireld has been a key figure at the back over the years. Davinson Sanchez has also received his fair share of opportunities under Mourinho. Young Japhet Tanganga has also proven his worth in a short time and could be a mainstay in the future.

Argentine youngster Juan Foyth has been overlooked by the manager and is heavily linked with a move elsewhere. Moreover, they also lost veteran Jan Vertonghen last month as the Belgian moved to Benfica when his contract came to an end. Thus, Spurs needs to bring in a centre-back this summer.

In that regard, Savic would be a fantastic addition to the squad. The Montenegro international is one of the leaders in Simeone’s renowned backline. He has made over 340 career appearances and his experience would definitely benefit the squad. He has been consistent and reliable in the last few years and could be a crucial player for Tottenham next season.

The former Manchester City man could be a short-term replacement for Vertonghen as he is experienced and could form a strong partnership alongside Alderweireld. His inclusion would add depth to Tottenham’s backline.

Verdict

At 29, he may not be around for the future but could definitely bring quality to the squad. And with Vertonghen gone, Tottenham are in need of a senior figure to help them in their defensive duties. And Savic perfectly fits the bill. Thus, reigniting their interest would be a wise decision by the Lilywhites.
