Why Tottenham should sign Ianis Hagi to improve their attacking options

According to The Sun, Tottenham have enquired about the possibilities of signing Romanian forward Ianis Hagi, who currently plies his trade with Rangers on loan.

After impressing with Fiorentina’s youth sides, Hagi, 21, moved to FC Viitorul, where he racked up 24 goals and 14 assists before moving to Genk last summer. He showed his brilliance in the Jupiler Pro League, scoring 3 goals and providing 4 assists in 14 games and Rangers signed him on loan in January.

Since his arrival in Glasgow, the youngster has elevated his game and has caught the attention of several top clubs in Europe. He was instrumental in the Gers’ win over Braga in the Europa League, scoring twice and providing 1 assist over both legs. With Hagi impressing over the past couple of years, Tottenham should look to sign him in the summer to bolster their attacking options.

Tottenham have had a downward slide after making the Champions League final last season. They have struggled under two managers and currently sit 8th in the league table. Harry Kane’s long-term absence has resulted in Spurs’ poor performance in the second half of the campaign.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho turned towards Lucas Moura to lead the attack but the Brazilian has failed to live up to the expectations. With injuries to several key players, Tottenham have lacked the cutting-edge up front. Steven Bergwijn, who made a brilliant start to life in North London has also been injured and South Korean international Son Heung-Min also underwent surgery.

Therefore, with a lot of struggles up front, it is clear that an injection of young blood is required for the Lilywhites to their attacking unit. The likes of Erik Lamela and Dele Alli have also been incapable of lifting the team’s attack. Thus, adding Ianis Hagi would be a wise decision by the club.

Hagi has been in tremendous form in the past two years for whichever team he has played. An attacking midfielder by trade, he is also capable of operating from either flank. He could be a better back-up for Moura and Son on the wings.

The Romanian international has already been capped 10 times by his national side and his experience could help him settle to the conditions of the Premier League. Tottenham need firepower in their attack as the current bunch of players have failed to create a winning atmosphere.

Verdict

With more than half of the squad performing below par, Mourinho should look to inject the squad with fresh legs and Hagi could provide them with the much-needed depth up front. He is just 21 and has a lot of room for development. Thus, signing him would bring healthy competition within the squad and help their performances.
