Why Tottenham should revive their interest in Marcel Sabitzer

Back in March, Calciomercato (h/t The Sun) suggested that Tottenham were interested in signing RB Leipzig star Marcel Sabitzer. However, no such talks have progressed since then.

Sabitzer, 25, came through the youth ranks of Admira Villach in Austria and moved to Germany with RB Leipzig in the summer of 2014. He was immediately sent to Leipzig’s sister club RB Salzburg, where he scored 19 goals and provided a whopping 16 assists in 33 Austrian top-flight games.

Since his return to Bundesliga a year later, the winger has been a regular member of the squad, helping them qualify twice for the Champions League. Though he struggled to score initially, he has been in excellent form in the last two seasons and has developed into an all-round player. And, the report suggests that Arsenal are also keen on securing the services of the Austrian.

Sabitzer could be a reliable all-rounder in Tottenham’s attack

In the absence of Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son, Tottenham struggled to score regularly. Despite having Eric Lamela, Lucas Moura and Dele Alli, all of whom are capable of scoring, the team has lacked intensity upfront.

Since last season’s Champions League final, Moura has not been the same. He hasn’t put in any match-winning performances and seems to be out of touch. Lamela also has struggled with injuries throughout the last couple of seasons and Alli, who did well earlier under Mourinho, has faded in the last few months. Thus, they need an attacker this summer.

In that regard, signing an all-round player would be a wise decision and Sabitzer would be a viable option for the club. The 25-year-old has scored 16 goals in 42 games across all competitions, providing 10 assists as well.

He was at his best against Mourinho’s men in the Champions League, scoring two of his team’s three second-leg goals. He has improved in terms of goalscoring this season.

A right-winger by trade, Sabitzer is capable of playing on the left flank and in the attacking midfield position too. He has the quality to succeed at the highest level as he has put in such performances in the Champions League this season. And he would be a good addition to Mourinho’s squad.

Verdict

Apart from Kane and Son, no one has taken the responsibility of scoring. They have failed to deliver as a team. Hence, Sabitzer could bolster their attack if he is able to replicate his current form. He is just 25 and has a lot more to offer in the future. Thus, they should reignite their interest in the Austrian and make an attempt to sign him this summer.
