Why Tottenham should sign Vedat Muriqi to bolster their attacking unit

According to reports in Turkey (h/t Evening Standard), Tottenham are ready to pay the £22m asking price to sign Vedat Muriqi in the summer.

Muriqi, 25, has established himself as one of the top strikers in Turkey after some unbelievable performances in the last two seasons. He is one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe (h/t Football.London) after guiding his team to the 7th place in the league.

Since his arrival at Fenerbahce last summer, he has been on top of his game and is third in the Super Lig’s list of top scorers. The Kosovan international could be on the move in the summer (h/t Football.London) and Tottenham should look to get their hands on him.

Jose Mourinho’s arrival in North London last November saw the Lilywhites perform well for quite a while but their inconsistency has proved costly in the latter stages. They have defensively struggled in several games in the league while their attacking unit hasn’t been good in recent times.

The long-term injury to Harry Kane dealt a big blow to the team as the rest of the squad failed to cope with the loss. Without a win in any of their last three league games, Spurs have slipped down to 8th position in the table and are at risk of losing out on a Champions League qualification spot.

The Portuguese tactician tried Lucas Moura upfront in the absence of their talisman but the Brazilian has failed to score in the last 12 games and looks comfortable when deployed on the right-wing. And Tottenham have no other established centre-forward apart from the England captain.

Thus, Mourinho should look to add quality options up front in the new season and Fenerbahce’s Vedat Muriqi would be a suitable choice to play alongside Kane or as a backup.

The Kosovan star is in a good run of form, scoring 17 goals and providing 8 assists last term. He has carried forward in the same vein of form this campaign as well, contributing with 13 goals and 5 assists so far.

Muriqi would add depth to Spurs’ attacking unit and, given his qualities and the form that he has shown at Fenerbahce, he would provide them with much-needed extra goals. His inclusion in the squad would also bring in healthy competition to Kane.

Verdict

With a lack of quality and depth up front, Tottenham are in dire need of a centre-forward, who can fit into Kane’s role perfectly whenever necessary. And the 25-year-old would provide them with just that. Hence, a move for Muriqi must take place in the summer.
