Why Tottenham signing Marcel Sabitzer would be a brilliant move

According to Calciomercato (h/t The Sun), Tottenham have joined the race to sign Austria star Marcel Sabitzer along with Arsenal.

Sabitzer, 25, came through the youth ranks of Admira Villach in Austria and moved to Germany with RB Leipzig in the summer of 2014. He was immediately sent to Leipzig’s sister club RB Salzburg, where he scored 19 goals and provided a whopping 16 assists in 33 Austrian top-flight games.

Since his return to Bundesliga a year later, the winger has been a regular member of the squad, helping them qualify twice for the Champions League. Though he struggled to score initially, he has been in excellent form in the last two seasons and has developed into an all-round player.

Meanwhile, Tottenham looked to get back on track upon the arrival of Jose Mourinho but they seem to be vulnerable in recent weeks. With several key players injured, Spurs have struggled to put in a string of consistent performances and seem set to miss out on Champions League qualification.

They are currently 8th in the league table after failing to win any of their last three league games. They have been thrown out of two different competitions within the space of a week, losing first to Norwich City in the FA Cup, followed by 4-0 aggregate loss to Leipzig in the Champions League.

Spurs boss Mourinho needs to get his team back to form for the next season and to do that, he has to bring in attacking reinforcements. Steven Bergwijn was signed in the winter and after making a good start to life in London, the Dutchman has become a victim of injury. The loss of Harry Kane and Son Hueng-Min has highlighted the need for backup options in the attacking department.

Therefore, it would be wise of the manager to bring in an all-round player and Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer would be a viable option.

The 25-year-old has scored 15 goals in 35 games across all competitions and is in the form of his life. He was at his best against Mourinho’s men a few days back, scoring 2 of the 3 second-leg goals. He has improved in terms of goalscoring this season.

A right-winger by trade, Sabitzer is capable of playing on the left flank and in the attacking midfield position too. Whereas, Dele Alli has not contributed much for Tottenham in the last few months.

The Austrian international has the quality to succeed at a higher level as he has put in such performances in the Champions League this season. And he would be a good addition to the Lilywhites squad.

Verdict

Apart from Kane and Son, no one has taken the responsibility of scoring. They have failed to deliver as a team. Hence, Sabitzer could bolster their attack if he is able to replicate his current form. He is just 25, has a lot more to offer and Spurs should be able to enjoy his services.

Therefore, to get stronger, the North Londoners should make a move for the Austrian international in the summer.
