According to Daily Mail, it is believed that Sean Longstaff could potentially head to Tottenham after switching agents and signing with Pini Zahavi. The Newcastle man is yet to agree on a new contract and now that he has hired the ‘super agent’, it is being mooted that he can broker a deal for Longstaff.
Longstaff enjoyed a wonderful breakthrough season at Tyneside in the 2018-19 campaign. He would probably have played a lot more for Newcastle, only for an injury to stall his meteoric rise in English football.
Following his Premier League debut against Liverpool, Longstaff put up a solid display in the defeat against Chelsea. He scored his first goal against Blackburn in the FA Cup before famously winning the penalty that led to Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Man City in January 2019.
The 21-year-old netted his maiden Premier League goal in the 2-0 victory over Burnley in February before an injury marked an end to his fairytale run. Longstaff made only 13 appearances for Newcastle at the senior level in his debut season but he impressed one and all with his energetic displays in the middle of the park.
While one would think Spurs are pretty set in every position and don’t need further additions, that is not exactly the case. In midfield, there seems to be doubt regarding the futures of Harry Winks and Dele Alli. Both midfielders have been on the fringes this season under Mourinho and look increasingly likely to leave the club.
That sort of leaves the team a bit light in the middle of the park. Here, a signing like Sean Longstaff would help all ends up.
The youngster carved out a reputation for himself as a tough-tackling, all-action, hard-working and tenacious central midfielder, with his impressive range of passing, composure in possession, temperament, aggressiveness and high levels of commitment on the pitch earning him rave reviews from fans and pundits alike.
Longstaff could add a lot of youthful exuberance and solidity to the central midfield, which, in turn, would not only reduce the pressure on the backline but also allow the more creative players to express themselves.
However, Spurs should only pursue the Newcastle man if any of their existing midfielders depart. Otherwise, it would crowd an already stacked midfield.
