Becky Lynch has become of the biggest names in the women’s division. But why is she called ‘The Man’?
Becky Lynch has made her name in the women’s division with incredible skills and courage. She has had some great matches with Charlotte Flair, Ronda Rousey and Bianca Belair.
During her feud with Charlotte Flair in 2018, she started naming herself ‘The Man’. She claims that she called Herself ‘The Man’ because,
“For me, it was a way of going into the guys’ locker room – going into the whole company – and saying, ‘I’m taking over. I’m The Man now.” in a chat with WebSummit in November 2019.
Lynch is one of the most recognizable and the highest paid wrestlers. Twitter even named her sixth on their Top Female Athletes WorldWide in 2019. She signed a contract with WWE in 2012 and was assigned to NXT. She soon became the inaugural SmackDown Women’s Champion at Backlash 2016.
In 2018 Lynch transitioned to a more aggressive character starting at SummerSlam when she attacked Charlotte Flair, presented herself as an unfairly treated underdog, and dubbed herself “The Man”, which resulted in a high increase in popularity. Soon after that, WrestleMania 35 won both Raw Women’s Championship and SmackDown Women’s Championship, making her the first woman to hold both the titles simultaneously.
Becky Lynch had one of the most iconic moments as “The Man” reign
On an episode of Monday Night Raw, Nia Jax legitimately punched Lynch, which gave her a concussion and a broken nose. However, The Irish kicker stood tall with blood pouring down her face. She led a group of SmackDown women’s wrestlers to invade RAW on the road to Survivor Series in 2018.
She spoke on Ariel Helwani’s MMA show about the incident and also mentioned her autopilot.
“I got a severe concussion and I broke my nose, so I was in [the] hospital that night after the event, so I completely blacked out after I got hit, right? But I rolled to the ropes and got back up again. So I guess my autopilot kicked in and I smashed half of RAW including Runny Ronnie, so it turns out that my autopilot is a badass too,” Becky Lynch said (h/t Bleacher Report).
She was out of action due to giving birth to her first child but returned to WWE for the SummerSlam PPV on August 2021 and defeated the EST of WWE in just 26 seconds to win the SmackDown Women’s Champion.
