Why Watford should take a gamble on Hassane Kamara

As per Footmercato (h/t The Shields Gazette), Watford have submitted a £4.5m bid for Reims left-back Hassane Kamara ahead of the summer transfer window.

Kamara, 26, flourished through the ranks of Toulouse’s youth ranks and moved to Reims in the summer of 2015. After initially struggling to find game time with Reims, he was sent on loan to US Creteil in order to play regularly.

Since his return to his parent club in the summer of 2017, he has featured regularly for Reims. Last season, he showed a slight dip in form but recovered immediately and has been the first-choice under David Guion this term.

His impressive performances have also garnered attention from several Premier League sides including Crystal Palace and Brighton and Hove Albion, as per the report.

The Hornets, meanwhile, have endured a disappointing campaign so far. Earlier, Quique Sanchez Flores for the lack of results. And they have ever since failed to make an impression, except in the game against Liverpool, since the arrival of Nigel Pearson.

Regardless of the league in which they will be playing in next season, the manager should bring in reinforcements to add depth to the squad.

Kamara could be a good addition at left-back

One of the chief reasons for their lacklustre performance is the failure of the defensive unit. They have conceded 44 goals so far. Thus, a central defender is a must in the summer to bolster their backline. Apart from that, the manager should also bring in full-backs to the squad.

Adam Masina and Jose Holebas are the only two available left-backs at the manager’s disposal. While Holebas has made just 12 appearances, the Italian has featured in 17 league games. Both of them have not claimed the spot for themselves and the Greece international is already 35, beyond his prime. Thus, a left-back in the summer would be a good acquisition for the Hornets.

In that regard, Kamara would be a viable option for the club. He has featured in 23 Ligue 1 games this term. Though he has not been effective in the team’s attack, racking up just 2 goals and no assists, he has been a part of Reims’ squad which has conceded just 21 goals in the French League.

The Frenchman’s numbers in the attack may not be the best but he has the ability to do well. His inclusion to Pearson’s squad would also bring in healthy competition, whilst he could provide depth at left-back.

Verdict

With Holebas’ contract coming to an end this July, Watford’s numbers at the back would be reduced. Thus, they should make a move for Kamara and lure him to Vicarage Road ahead of the start of the new campaign.
