Why Wesley Fofana would be a future investment for Leicester City
As per Le10 Sport (h/t Leicestershire Live), Leicester City are monitoring Saint-Etienne defender Wesley Fofana ahead of the summer transfer window.
Fofana, 19, is a product of Saint-Etienne’s youth system. The defender has risen rapidly through the youth ranks and broke into the first-team towards the end of the last season. He became a regular member of the team in the 2019/20 term.
After struggling to find chances earlier in the campaign, the youngster has become a regular member under Claude Puel. He has been impressive in the last few months and his eye-catching displays have also attracted the attention of AC Milan RB Leipzig, as per the report.
Leicester, meanwhile, have seen a change in their results since Brendan Rodgers took charge of the club. They have been brilliant in every department throughout the campaign. After 4 wins out of the last 6 league games, the Foxes are currently 3rd in the league table.
They are flying high on the back of the success of star striker Jamie Vardy, who has scored 19 goals so far. He is the league’s top scorer, with two goals more than Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Along with the attacking unit, the midfield contingent has also played a major role in the campaign.
Harvey Barnes, James Maddison, Youri Tielemans and Wilfred Ndidi have been brilliant in the middle of the park, putting in major contributions. Leicester have positioned themselves in the right place to qualify for next seasons Champions League. However, the manager needs to bring in reinforcements if they are to progress in further campaigns.
Fofana could be a future investment for Leicester’s defence
Leicester’s defence has also played a major role in their success so far. The partnership between Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans has excelled, conceding just 28 goals in the campaign. And they boast of the third-best defensive record in the league.
Apart from them though, none one has made an impression in the heart of the Foxes’ defence. Club captain Wes Morgan has featured in just 8 games so far. He is already 36 and reaching the end of his career. The Jamaican’s contract is also set to expire in the summer.
Leicester did sign Ryan Bennett on loan in January but his loan deal will expire this summer. This would leave them with limited options, and thus, signing Fofana would add options at the back.
Fofana is one of the upcoming stars in Ligue 1 and has been a standout performer despite his team struggling this term. In the 14 games he has featured, the teenager has also contributed with one goal, while he has the best interceptions per match in the division, as per the report.

The Frenchman would add depth to Rodgers’ squad if he joins them. And under the guidance of the Scottish tactician, he would further develop his game, potentially growing into a long-term asset for the club.
Verdict
While the Leicester defence has performed admirably this season, both Morgan (36) and Evans (32) are into their thirties. And the Foxes should look to groom someone to take over in the coming seasons, making Fofana a viable option.
The Frenchman’s signing would provide them with the depth in the squad. Thus, Leicester should make a move for the teenage this summer.
