Why West Ham must offload youngster Nathan Holland this summer

According to Football Insider (h/t Yorkshire Live), West Ham may sell youngster Nathan Holland for £1million when the transfer window reopens.

Holland, who will turn 22 this June, is currently on loan with League One promotion hopefuls Oxford United. The young winger, who was a part of West Ham’s under-23 side, left for Oxford United in January. He has been an instant hit since arriving there. Holland has earned rave reviews after scoring three goals from 12 matches across all competitions for the League One outfit.

However, Holland, who has a contract with the Hammers until 2022, may face the exit door this summer as the club are suffering financial crunches amidst the coronavirus pandemic. The Manchester-born youngster has so far featured just four times for the West Ham senior side and has failed to make a breakthrough yet.

Meanwhile, Holland had been linked with a summer move to Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday back in February. The Garry Monk-led side are in need of a player, who can feature on the right wing, with on-loan star Jacob Murphy expected to return to his parent club Newcastle United in the summer.

No room for Holland in West Ham at the moment

West Ham have as many as five wingers in their side, with the most recent of them being Jarrod Bowen, who arrived from Hull City in the winter window.

Bowen, who has been impressive in the Championship for Hull City in the past couple of seasons, has made an instant impact. He has featured in four of their last five league outings.

West Ham also have experienced wingers Felipe Anderson, Andriy Yarmolenko, Michail Antonio, and veteran Robert Snodgrass. This means Holland’s chances will be increasingly limited if he stays at the London Stadium.

Snodgrass is the side’s top assist provider and second-highest goalscorer with five each to his name. Hence, with Snodgrass in the side, Holland might take some time to make an entry into the first-team. It is clear that he is surplus to the club’s requirements at the moment.

West Ham should rather sell him and make use of that money to better their squad in areas that need improvement ahead of next season.

Verdict

Moyes has enough established wingers at his disposal and it would be very rare that Holland gets a chance to break into the side. Also, with Holland having failed all this while to impress at West Ham, it is clear that he is not in Moyes’ plans. Hence, West Ham should offload their unwanted winger soon than later.
