West Ham were tipped as one of the early favourites to face the drop. Slaven Bilic’s brand of football was just not working for the Hammers anymore. The manager was eventually sacked and in came former Manchester United manager David Moyes.
Moyes earned his name and reputation as a manager with Everton, he was dubbed “The Chosen One” when the manager was picked to take the hot seat at Manchester United. Under his guidance, West Ham finished 13th in the league, scoring 42 points across the campaign.
Moyes ensured the Hammers’ safety but was inevitably sacked after a string of lacklustre performances. In came Manuel Pellegrini, one of Europe’s most renowned coaches in the game. Pellegrini also coached Manchester City, helping them to a league title in the 2013/14 season.
The Chilean will now be looking to take West Ham and turn them into a formidable side once again. The signing of Pellegrini is a huge statement from West Ham but they also need to strengthen their squad to fare better next term.
One such name that has emerged as a Hammers’ target is Yaya Toure. The Ivorian has left Manchester City this summer after a successful time at the Etihad Stadium. Although he struggled for game time last season, Toure still feels he’s good enough to play in the Premier League.
West Ham have opened talks regarding a move for Toure, who is keen to reunite with Pellegrini at West Ham. The 35-year-old has to accept a pay cut to play for the Hammers but West Ham are confident of getting the deal done. Under Pellegrini, Toure won a Premier League title and two League Cups with City.
A few days ago, Yaya Toure stunningly opened up about how he fell out with current Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, calling him a disrespectful racist. However, Toure was deservedly given a hero’s sendoff as the Citizens renamed a training ground after him. But he has to move on now, and the prospect of reuniting with former manager Pellegrini at the London Stadium could be blessing in disguise for the Ivorian.
