West Ham signing this struggling 27-year-old Man United star would certainly boost depth

Why West ham signing Jesse Lingard would boost their midfield options

As per 90min (h/t The Express), West Ham are one among several English clubs interested in signing midfielder Jesse Lingard from Manchester United.

The 27-year-old is a product of Manchester United’s youth academy. He made his breakthrough in the 2015/16 season and was considered to be a huge prospect for the club. His impressive performances also earned him a call-up to England’s national team and he was a regular member until the 2018 World Cup.

However, since then, his career has stalled and the midfielder has failed to keep his spot in the starting XI. And the report suggests that he could be just a squad player next season for United. Thus, West Ham should take the opportunity to sign him this summer.

The Hammers, meanwhile, have endured a disappointing campaign so far. Manuel Pellegrini was sacked earlier in the campaign as they were struggling to move out of the relegation zone. Later, the arrival of David Moyes saw them get off to a good start but the results didn’t last long.

West Ham are currently 16th in the league standings, equal in points with the relegation-threatened Bournemouth. They are at risk of falling into the relegation zone if they don’t perform better when the league resumes.

Moyes’ men have been inconsistent throughout the season. One of the major reasons for their lacklustre performance is the lack of confidence in front of goal. The strikers have not been up to the mark and have failed put in a string of solid displays.

While it is clear that the Hammers are in dire need of a striker, the manager should also bring in reinforcements to other key areas.

Lingard could provide West Ham with depth in the midfield

However, one key area which Moyes should focus on strengthening is the midfield. Manuel Lanzini and Pablo Fornals are the two attacking midfielders available at the manager’s disposal. While Fornals has done a decent job, Lanzini has struggled to find form.

In that regard, Lingard could be an extra option for the manager to choose from. Though the English international has not been at his best this season, he is capable of contributing to the team if he regains confidence.

Lingard’s inclusion would also provide them with the much-needed depth. He has made over 300 career appearances and his experience could be a massive boost for the side. The Englishman is also capable of operating on the right wing.

Verdict

West Ham have struggled with depth in the middle of the park and their creativity has not been at its best. Thus, signing Lingard could help them if the Warrington-born midfielder can get back to his best. Hence, the Hammers should make a move for him this summer.
